We want to thank all of those who attended our annual Pig Roast held at the Philadelphia Brewing Company. They along with Cosmic Catering went above and beyond in their hosting of our annual event. We truly appreciate them donating their time, the good food and great beer, and their space to us and hope as friends and members of our chapter that we reciprocate by supporting them for their kindness.
A couple of things that might be of interest to you as Slow Foodies…
This is not a Slow Food sponsored event, but we thought this might be of interest to some members since it is in the spirit of Slow Food. Interested in a culinary trip?
One of our members who was a former Terra Madre delegate back in 2006 and has been involved in events with our chapter in the past, Aliza Green, some of you may know her cookbooks and her history in local Philadelphia culinary circles, will be leading a wonderful culinary tour to Chios, Greece (the only place in the world that amazing mastic resin is harvested), Aegean Turkey and Istanbul. We’ll be taking part in this artisanal harvest on mastic working with a local eco-tourism foundation, having 3 cooking classes including 2 with top Turkish chefs, visiting farmers markets, an organic farm, wineries, having two special meals in my Turkish friend’s homes and so much more. The group will include a French filmmaker who will be trailing our group making a documentary and a local food editor who will be writing about it in the Buck’s County newspapers.

Interested in beekeeping?
Honeybees were first introduced into America by Europeans. Getting started as a beekeeper, even in the inner city, is easy. Classes are available in both PA and NJ and there are local organizations that can provide education and support and catalogs can provide starter kits. Bees are really docile, nonaggressive insects. Philadelphia played an important role in beekeeping as the birthplace of the Rev. Lorenzo Langstroth “Father of American Beekeeping”. The local Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild is celebrating his 200th birthday this year with events and classes around the city and you can learn more by viewing their website listed below. His extensive work helped to improve the modern bee box to allow hives to be moved around for pollination in the fields and other innovations including the queen extruder so that only honey would be produced in the upper chambers for safe removal. Below are posted some websites for you to learn more about beekeeping and our local Philadelphia Guild that meets in Germantown. This is a fascinating and rewarding pastime for any gardener.
