Common Market GMO Panel
February 20, 2014 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am
You may have heard of “GMOs” or “genetically modified organisms” – those whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. However, do you know how and why GMOs are used in our food supply and if they are safe?
Join Common Market, Jefferson Wellness Council and the Philadelphia South Jersey Society for Healthcare Food Service Administrators for an educational seminar on GMOs. This free seminar is for anyone interested in sustainable food systems including registered dietitians, institutional food providers and concerned consumers.
You’ll hear from these experts:
Annmarie Cantrell. Co-Founder and President, GMO Free Pennsylvania and Wellness Educator and Chef, Cucina Verde. Ms. Cantrell will speak on the health implications of genetically engineered foods and the effects of glyhosates on human health.
Dr. Scott Poethig, University of Pennsylvania, Department of Biology. Dr. Poethig teaches a course, “Biology of Food,” which examines the ways in which humans manipulate -and have been manipulated by – the organisms we depend on for food.
Jon McGoran, Author of Drift, an ecological thriller from Tor/Forge Books, and its sequel, Deadout. Mr. McGoran has been writing about food and sustainability for over twenty years, and later as editor in chief of Grid, a magazine covering issues of sustainability.
